Happy Independence Day! Are You Happy?

It's common to greet Americans with well-wishes on Independence Day. The Fourth of July is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, marking the establishment of the United States as united, free, and independent states. However, the complex history of the U.S. has not always ensured unity and equality for all its people. Unfortunately, the progress we've made in addressing food insecurity was reversed by the Big Spending Bill passed on July 3, 2025.

After two decades as a food security advocate, I face uncertainty and confusion in our industry, along with deep compassion for the families we serve who are struggling with food insecurity. One thing is certain: while our policies and processes may evolve, our commitment will never waver. Your contributions are vital for us to address the growing population facing food insecurity as a result of this bill.

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, gives a humane summation of the Big Beautiful Bill. He said, “the bill takes from the poor to give to the wealthy. It provides tax breaks for some while undermining the social safety net for others through major cuts to nutrition assistance and Medicaid," he continued. "It fails to protect families and children by promoting an enforcement-only approach to immigration and eroding access to legal protections. It harms God's creation and future generations through cuts to clean energy incentives and environmental programs."

Am I happy? This reckoning  saddens me for those who will be affected by the passage of this bill and for the future of our nation. I can only envision what true independence would look like when everyone is included.
