Flexibility for School Meal Programs

On May 1, 2017, US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced that the USDA will provide greater flexibility nutrition requirement for school meals to make them both healthy and appealing to students. The proclamation will restore local control of guidelines on whole grains, sodium and milk. Mr. Perdue is making these changes based on feedback from students, schools and food service experts.

I have been blogging for a year on food insecurity and this is the first time the subject matter professional is someone I can interview. Ms. Haynes, is the cafeteria manager at College Park Elementary School, in College Park, Georgia. She has 13 years’ experience as a food service expert in public schools. Click on the video below to hear her experience with whole grains, sodium and milk guidelines for school meals.
