“It’s Back to School Time Again: The Power of Partnership”

Summer vacations are almost over, which means it's time for school to start. From shopping for new clothes and buying everything on the schools supply list, back to school season is very busy and expensive. The National Retail Association has reported, “Families with children in grades K-12 plan to spend an average $673.57 on apparel and accessories, electronics, shoes and school supplies, up from last year’s $630.36 for a total of $27.3 billion.”

For families struggling to put food on the table, buying school supplies may create a financial stress. In addition, the Georgia legislature, did not approve the back-to-school sales tax holiday this year. Many families rely on the back-to-school sales tax holiday to purchase schools supplies. Some parents will still be able to purchase school supplies, but for low income families cancelling the sales tax holiday is another obstacle preventing them from providing for their children.

Fulton County Schools and partner agencies hosted a Back-to-School Pep Rallies on July 22, 2017, to give away school supplies to their students. Land of Promise (Nourish the Need Program) in partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank (Kids in Need Program) donate school supplies to Fulton County Schools. Each program’s vision includes the belief that every child should have the tools necessary to achieve academic success. This collaborative effort focuses on improving students’ lives whose educational accomplishments are threatened by poverty.
